In the nursing profession, the initial step to surmounting the barriers faced by registered nurses as inventors involves adherence to the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (ANA, 2015a), which provide a framework for nursing innovation. A nurse innovator can be defined as an individual who endeavors to effect positive changes in the healthcare system by enhancing quality and equity, addressing the unmet needs of a specific population through the introduction of new products, processes, and services. These innovators strive to enhance outcomes and the patient experience by reconceptualizing and reshaping healthcare while developing innovative care models (Mason et al., 2015).
The sustainability and autonomy of a profession hinge on continuous improvement in the services, processes, and care provided to its recipients. Overcoming the barriers faced by registered nurses as inventors necessitates steadfast adherence to the scope and standards of practice, compliance with national and state health policies, and the fulfillment of their roles and responsibilities within the framework of nursing regulations. Innovation is synonymous with research endeavors, and nurses are actively engaged in various studies aimed at enhancing patient care. For instance, within my unit, a study was conducted on the effects of scheduled nap times in reducing instances of agitation and aggressive outbursts among patients with psychosis, bipolar disorder, and manic episodes. The findings were incorporated into the treatment plans for these patients, and the unit now observes a two-hour period of quiet time daily between 12 noon and 2 pm.
Furthermore, I believe that pursuing higher education fosters a heightened awareness of patient needs and effective delivery of nursing services in a cost-effective manner, thereby fostering innovative ideas. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the number of registered nurses obtaining advanced degrees, which I consider to be a positive trend in overcoming the barriers faced by nurse innovators. Additionally, nursing informatics plays a crucial role in the nursing profession by acquainting nurses with the benefits of technology in enhancing nursing care. Moreover, the increasing autonomy within the nursing profession is instrumental in overcoming its barriers.
