Once upon a time, deep in the heart of the jungle, the mighty lion—the king of beasts—fell into a hunter’s trap. He thrashed and roared, clawed at the ropes, and fought with all his strength, but no matter how hard he tried, he could not break free. Hours passed. The lion grew tired, weak, and very hungry. For the first time, the king of the jungle began to lose hope.
Just then, a dog trotted by. Desperate, the lion cried out,
“Please, my friend, have mercy! Help me out of this trap and I will forever be grateful.”
The dog stopped, suspicious. He knew the lion’s reputation—mischievous, cunning, and quick to turn on those who trusted him. “If I set you free,” the dog said cautiously, “how do I know you won’t harm me?”
The lion shook his head, putting on his sweetest voice:
“Oh no, I would never hurt you. You would be my savior, my brother. Please, help me, I beg you.”
Moved by pity, the dog chewed at the ropes until at last the lion was free. But no sooner had the lion stretched his limbs than he licked his lips and growled,
“Ah, how convenient—you have saved me just in time for dinner. And you shall be my meal.”
The dog trembled in fear. “But you promised!” he pleaded.
The lion roared back, “I am the king of the jungle. My promise is my hunger.”
As the argument grew louder, along came the wise tortoise, strolling slowly with his steady shell. Curious, he asked,
“What is the matter here?”
Both the lion and the dog poured out their sides of the story. The tortoise listened carefully, nodding. Then he scratched his head and said,
“I do not understand. I cannot picture it. Lion, show me how you were trapped so that I can see what truly happened.”
Proud and certain of his power, the lion agreed. He climbed back into the hunter’s trap and allowed himself to be bound once more.
The tortoise turned to the dog and smiled:
“Now you see the truth. A promise broken deserves no freedom. Let the lion stay where he belongs.”
And with that, the dog and the tortoise walked away, leaving the lion to roar helplessly in the hunter’s trap.
