In February 2024, a poignant incident unfolded at Paramount Clinic and Images Port Harcourt in River State, Nigeria, as 24-year-old graduate Rebekah Sekidika tragically passed away. Graduating with top honors from Benson Idahosa University, Rebekah’s promising future was abruptly cut short as she succumbed to complications following a non-life-threatening routine hysterectomy procedure at the clinic.

The grief-stricken family of the deceased has since leveled allegations of negligence against the medical facility, lamenting the loss of their daughter. Her father, in particular, has vociferously demanded justice, citing what he perceives as the “negligence and incompetence” of the medical team involved in the procedure. He sorrowfully conveyed, “This is a loss we will mourn for the rest of our lives. Instead of a marriage certificate, it is a death certificate I got.”

Expressing his anguish over the untimely demise of his academically accomplished daughter, the bereaved father highlighted Rebekah’s aspirations to pursue further studies abroad. With her visa secured and tuition fees paid, she had been on the brink of embarking on postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom before fate intervened.

The River State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, confirmed the initiation of an autopsy and toxicology analysis, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

As the community mourns this grievous loss, heartfelt condolences are extended to Rebekah Sekidika’s family.
